Health and Physical Fitness, How Are They Linked?
Good health and
physical fitness:
how closely are they linked? Well, we know that being active has a positive effect on your overall well-being, but is it possible that someone who lives an active lifestyle and has a decent diet can still be at risk? We've all heard stories of people who were relatively young and in good shape who suddenly keeled over from a heart attack, stroke, or even both and you ask yourself, "how could this have happened? They were in great shape!" Just being active sometimes isn't enough. Your body can be broken down into the
major components
and the
minor components
of physical fitness. When you ask someone what it means to be in good shape they will usually lean towards the definition of the major components, and of course they're important, but the these components are only one part of the equation. Aside from being active and eating a balanced diet, other components of wellness include: • Social- Refers to relationships with other people, your environment and the ability to have balanced relationships with other people. • Mental- The ability to acquire knowledge from both structured environments and life experience. • Emotional- Refers to both controlling your emotions and expressing them appropriately. • Spiritual- A belief in something greater than yourself; it varies from person to person If any of these components (major, minor and the elements listed above) are consistently lacking or neglected, it will be more difficult to achieve overall wellness due to imbalance. The challenge is to monitor ourselves and recognize when these imbalances occur and remedy them as soon as possible and to the best of our abilities.
