Physical Fitness At Your Finger Tips

Physical fitness: do you believe it should be accessible to everyone, at any time?

Physical fitness and healthy living were once the domain of jocks or the very vain; you know, the people who couldn’t walk by a mirror without staring at their tanned skin, perfect hair and perfect teeth and who looked at fitness on a superficial level?

And why not? The fitness industry promoted it's 'product' this way for decades. I admit to being the same in my early years, although I never had perfect teeth.

In the 80's money seemed to grow on trees and many people thought the good times would last forever, but unless you've been living under a rock or have buried your head in the sand then you don't need to be told—or maybe you do—that not only is the ride over but someone stole the amusement park and replaced it with a garbage dump. You might be asking yourself 'What does this have to do with fitness and healthy living? If I can't feed myself or my family what the hell is an exercise routine and abs of steel going to do for me?' Instead of explaining, let me tell you a true story.

"Good health ensures your money is being spent on food, your mortgage and the necessities of life instead of on unnecessary medication or hospital fees".

True Story

A member of my immediate family had four cars for two drivers and a nice house in the suburbs with a hot tub and a garden when he was suddenly rushed to the hospital with his blood sugar level at 98. To give you an idea what this means, if your blood sugar is as high as 10 your doctor might freak out...and he was at 98. He was only in his early 30's and had two young boys and a wife at home.

In the ICU he was assigned the exact same bed my father used a few years earlier after suffering a stroke. It was pretty surreal. My family member was close to death that night and the only thing he was concerned about was who was going to take care of his kids. He kept on saying over and over again "Take care of my boys, take care of my boys."

Today he's fine, he has his diabetes under control and is expecting another child with his wife, but you know, with a little prevention that critical situation could have been avoided.

Let's change the scenario a bit, say there's no health insurance, creditors are breathing down your back, maybe you're out of work and one paycheck away from the banks moving in on your home, well suddenly that adds an extra dimension of worry and fear.

This scenario is happening these days, so physical fitness must be looked at in terms of financial stability and long term independence as well as a way to be healthy. In short, it's about more than just looking and feeling good—physical fitness and good health are protective measures capable of preventing a lot of heartache, both literally and metaphorically.

How do I know this works? Because my family and I live by these principles ourselves.

I'm a natural athlete with a long history of sports training behind me, including gold medals at the provincial level for track and field, captaining a hockey team before I could drive, being a certified personal trainer and acquiring extensive experience training and teaching combat sports such as boxing and kickboxing so physical fitness was a large part of my life. Despite this, my body never looked how I wanted it to look, never felt as fit as I wanted it to.

I used to see the old-time boxers and their body weight exercises and wondered how they did it, but it wasn't until I started circuit training and using body weight exercises, proper resistance training, and cleaning up my eating and lifestyle habits that I got my answer.
